Horseshoes and Birds
by Edith Escalante, Diane Collins,
Fred Collins, Joan Katchur, and
Lou Ann Phillips
Two-and-one-quarter pound
iron
Two-and-one-quarter
turns
Two wings swoop --
bird and shoe
clench iron stake
same time -- safe --
A ringer!
My breakfast eggs were man-made --
The sausage -- bogus, too!
The coffee was a bitter and
decaffeinated brew.
The cream was made from corn oil --
The sugar -- saccharin!
I couldn't help but wonder,
where will all this end?
For lunch, a veggie burger
served on a paper plate.
The fries were cooked in no-fat oil
and tasted 7th rate.
My stomach's asking for REAL food --
steaks, chops and such ...
With a world of things to wish for,
That doesn't seem like much!
Supper? I'm not hungry --
Perhaps, it's just as well --
There's nothing on the menu
that rings my dinner bell!
I guess I'll simply waste away
until I'm just a shell --
Then die -- and spend eternity
in Simulated Hell!
Contemplation
