Twilight by Stephanie Meyers, ©2005, Little, Brown,
498pgs.
This isn't really horror, but a romance novel. Some
people do consider paranormal romance a subgenre of horror, and
I needed something to write about.
A male friend loaned me the book, which he had gotten
from his teenage daughter. It's easy to see why this series has
such a big readership among teenage females.
It's the story of the romance between Bella, who has
moved to the small town of Forks, Oregon to live with her
father, Charlie, and Edward, who happens to be a vampire.
This is a vampire novel in which the word vampire isn't
mentioned until 150 pages into the book. I like the part where
Bella thinks Edward is a superhero. It makes sense she would
think this after he saves her from being crushed by a van. Plus
in this world vampires can go out in the day,
though direct sunlight does have an effect on their bodies.
There is some horror near the end of the novel, which
starts when the Cullens, the family of vampires, decide to have
a baseball game. The vampires can only play baseball when there
is a storm because when they hit the ball it sounds like
thunder.
Another group of vampires hears the game going on and
goes to investigate. One of the new vampires is a hunter, and
he decides that he's going to hunt Bella, whose blood smells
really good to vampires.
With about 150 pages left in the book, the action
begins. Edward and his family help Bella escape this new
vampire.
If you're looking for a romance that has a little bit of
action towards the end and a new take on vampires, this is the
book for you.
I'm off to read New Moon, the second book in the series.
